GRADUATE PROGRAM

We recently joined with several other departments to create an umbrella graduate program called the PROGRAM IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES & ENGINEERING (PBSE). This new program reflects the interdisciplinary and collaborative nature of biomedical research at UCSC. PBSE predoctoral fellows have the opportunity to study biology at the molecular, cellular, and genomics levels, and can take advantage of advanced laboratory facilities, computational tools, and a vibrant and interactive research environment.

Forty-four faculty members in the Departments of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology, Biomolecular Engineering, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology participate in the program. Students apply directly to the PBSE, selecting from one of the following interdisciplinary training tracks:

* Bioinformatics & Computational Biology
* Mechanistic, Structural & Chemical Biology
* Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology

SUPPORT FOR GRADUATE STUDIES

The National Institutes of Health recognized the quality of the training program and its students by awarding an NIH Training Grant. In addition we have a collaborative training grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to support research trainees in the area of stem cell biology.  The department also has abundant sources of Research Assistantships and Teaching Assistantships available to graduate students.  Support levels are competitive with other graduate programs in the Bay Area.

PROSPECTS

Former graduate students have obtained faculty positions at prominent academic institutions such as Harvard Medical School, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Texas, as well as at top tier biotechnology firms, such as Affymetrix. Our program is firmly committed to furthering the careers of women and underrepresented minorities in biomedical science, and is closely affiliated with highly successful IMSD/MBRS programs.
